Clementine crashes with "assert failure ***stack smashing detected***"

Clementine crashes unexpectedly in between songs. It happens with different file formats and I haven't noticed a pattern yet. Sometimes it happens just as I start playing music, sometimes I am able to listen to some songs and then it crashes. I don't know if it makes a difference, but all my music files are on another computer and I play them via my home network.

On my machine, the bug is always related (as far as I checked) to MP4 AAC files. Every time I try playing an MP4 file with AAC sound encoding, clementine crashes with the message: *** stack smashing detected ***: clementine terminated
