evms broke the upgrade from feisty to gutsy

Bug Description

Booting the new kernel from gutsy resulted in about 8 times per second the following lines on the console.

device-mapper: table: 254:6: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table

boot, home and other data partitions could not be mounted. The system worked fine with the old feisty kernel.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/141435 reported similar problems.

Removing the not needed evms package solved the problem. I do not know why I had it on my system in the first place.

# uname -a
Linux gue710 2.6.22-14-386 #1 Wed Oct 10 05:26:36 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Hi

I can confirm this:

Upon completing upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy RC 1, the kernel log filled with the following.

Could freak some new users out if they are confronted with this on install / upgrade (although it may not happen with a new install).

As Guenther stated, removing evms and dependencies (evms-ncurses in my case) solved the problem (which I found via a ubuntu forums post on a WinXP machine as my system was unusable)

log example, note the times.

Hope this helps. The simple fix may be to remove evms on upgrade ??
