Bug Description

Connecting an USB disk on an USB port is OK the fisrt time,
but if I disconnect then reconnect the same disk on the same USB port it fails.

During the second connection, the following message appears in /var/log/syslog :
usb 3-9: reset high-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd
and device number seems to be incremented at each connection
    Nov 23 13:43:10 sfi-HP kernel: [ 283.303410] usb 3-9: reset high-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd

Here are all messages in /var/log/syslog :

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

No, 3 weeks ago, I got a new desktop and I have installed Ubuntu 14.04
LTS (running apt-get update then upgrade).
So I didn't try another kernel on that machine.
Before, I was using this USB disk with an older DELL desktop running
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

No, sorry, this is not possible, since I use this desktop for my daily work.
