kmail (15.08.2) will not load external references (HTML images)

Default version of kmail from Kubuntu 15.10 (15.08.2-0ubuntu1) will not load external references (aka, HTML images), even when the setting to load images is turned on.

What I've tried:

1) Re-install Kubuntu 15.10
2) Login with an empty config
3) Login with a test user

In all cases, email messages will load from my IMAP server, but the messages won't load external images. I've tested in other email clients both on the current system, as well as on other computers. It works everywhere else, except for the kmail in Kubuntu 15.10.

Did the upgrade to 15.10 at the weekend and now I'm not seeing any images in KMail either.

Is also affecting Akregator which is also articles dated 2106.
