Bug Description
Manager UI does not show any updated information. Main status window just shows "Retrieving current status"
Projects: Synchronize, project web pages, project commands buttons are all greyed out, but clickable. project drop-down is greyed out, does not show the selected project, but is clickable, and you can select the project. suspend is greyed out, but clickable and works.
In short, the UI functions, but does not redraw its window contents, so you have to click around blindly to use it.

I had the same issue.
To fix I did
sudo apt-get purge boinc myusernamexyz
sudo apt-get autoremove
rm -r .BOINC
rm -r .BOINC\ Manager
rm BOINC\ Manager-
I rebooted.
then:
sudo apt-get install boinc-manager
Instead of launching boinc, I launched boincmgr. I think this made a difference.
Added Project and User.
When You see "Retrieving current status"
Go to main menu (at top of screen) -> View -> Advanced View...
Project -> Column Status should be blank then
Issue was solved this way for me. But sure, this could depend on many things...
