It looks like there is a WebP plugin in development at https://github.com/PintaProject/WebPAddin but don't know if it is finished yet. I can't see any binary file, so it probably means it has to be compiled. I also see this plug-in is not available in Add-ins | Add-ins Manager | Gallery tab | | Repository: All repositories | File Formats.

I hope project maintainers can write some additional info.

What is the status of this. Since webp now becomes more mainstream (for example wordpress support), it makes sense to also add it to pinta.

I think that WebP addin is available on Linux, although IIRC it relies on having libwebp installed on the system.

Built-in support could be something to think about for the GTK3 branch, where we could potentially use any WebP packages that are on Nuget, and that might simplify having to build & bundle libwebp with Pinta on other platforms.

I don't think Gdk.Pixbuf has gained any built-in support for webp images, or else that would already be working in Pinta :)

I found https://github.com/aruiz/webp-pixbuf-loader which if installed would probably enable webp support without any changes in Pinta. It's not in a ton of distros yet though

I've now tested the webp-pixbuf-loader on Manjaro (where it's already available in the repos), and it works great
I'd say this seems like the best approach to take since it's just a matter of packaging and doesn't require any extra maintenance in Pinta itself.

This could be included in the snap / flatpak packages.
For the Windows / Mac installers we'd have to be bundling libwebp anyways, so also including webp-pixbuf-loader is hopefully not a problem...

webp-pixbuf-loader is now bundled with the macOS installer, and is noted as a suggested dependency for Linux packagers.
A remaining TODO would be to figure out how to package this with the Windows installer, but I don't think that needs to be a blocker as I'd like to do a Pinta 2.1 release in the near future
