Bug Description

The Edit->Preferences dialog is no longer accessible by default.

I managed to re-enable it following the hack outlined at http://askubuntu.com/questions/375049/where-are-gedits-preferences by running:

    gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings overrides '@a{sv} {"Gtk/ShellShowsAppMenu": <int32 0>}'

However, by default, Gedit no longer seems to expose its preferences dialog, which makes Gedit far less convenient to use. Please re-enable this feature by default.

Thank you for your bug report. What's the output of the command "dpkg -l | grep indicator-appmenu"?

I'm not sure to understand. Do you get no menu or is that just that item working? If the menu was buggy for everyone we would have feedback about that before now so it must be a local issue. Does it work fine in a guest session?

Under the "Edit" menu item, there was no "Preferences" item.

I think this is my misunderstanding over the new Gnome 3 UI layout. I still think it's terribly unintuitive, but it seems only the "Preferences" item has been moved to the "top menu", which I thought was just the name of the program and not a separate menu. All other menus appear to still be in the normal Gedit menu bar.

Unsure what you are describing, I just downloaded a 14.04.3 iso and booted in a vm and took a screenshot showing the menu, seems the item is there ... do you have any specific in your configuration? does it work in a guest session?

Please read the askubuntu link I posted. I'm using gnome-shell. Many people are having this issue.
