Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

I can't easily add an usb printer if this printer is not connected.
When adding the printer, the wizard do not offer me the usb connection type. I must go to "Other" and enter something like "usb:/dev/usblp0"

This is a problem of the architecture of CUPS. CUPS supports only setting up local printers if the printers are actually connected and turned on. It does not support device-based URIs like usb:/dev/usblp0, only device-ID based URIs, like usb://hp/laserjet_3390.

So how is one to define a parallel printer connected with a converter to a USB port? What is the correct URI entry?

I have a USB brother HL-1440 that is connected directly via USB. Ubuntu does not give me the option to detect or add a USB printer as in the past. I can not connect the printer because I have no clue what the URI for the printer should be.
