it's especially useful when naming things by date, like lectures in class etc.

but ofc default to handling them the same, just make it an option like the reverse sort

I mean I guess the "sort by" menu isn't crazy complicated. Could add a checkbox like "Separate files and folders" or something

This is related to bug 1533882. Providing a UX option in Files is an alternative to having File automatically follow the setting org.gtk.
