Multiple-copy printing w/ duplex produces poor results

Bug Description

My printer is configured to print duplex by default. I have a 1-page PDF document that I want to print multiple copies of. If I open the document in evince and increase the "Copies" field in the print dialog to 2, I get one sheet of paper out of the printer with the document printed on both sides. While this is vaguely correct, in that two copies of the document were printed, my expectation was that each copy would be on its own sheet.

No package listed because I don't know if this bug is in evince, CUPS, or some layer in between.

This behavior appears in both Feisty and the latest Gutsy beta.

Does this also happen if you try to print multiple copies of a one page document in other programs besides evince, i.e. Gedit or OpenOffice?

No, it does not.

This is still a problem in 8.10. It seems to be a Document Viewer or gnome problem, as in Hardy I was able to use Kpdf with good results, but not Document viewer. Now Ocular (I think this replaces KPDF) only prints one copy regardless of the number I select. So does Acrobat. I'm going to open another bug for that though.

Also related to this is the problem of finishers. We have a Canon printer that staples the pages too, and in Document Viewer it staples the whole stack together.
