Bug Description

Suddenly and without any warning the screen became blank and lightdm rebooted. I have found these interesting lines in dmesg:

[14137.598202] [drm:intel_set_pch_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared pch fifo underrun on pch transcoder A
[14137.598222] [drm:intel_pch_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[14137.608538] [drm:intel_set_cpu_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared fifo underrun on pipe B
[14137.608552] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun
[14245.095875] [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=601133 end=601134)
[14697.328451] hrtimer: interrupt took 381228 ns
[14744.724686] [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe B (start=36973 end=36974)
[17123.949459] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 9
[17794.824728] [drm:intel_dp_start_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* failed to enable link training
[17794.830525] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* failed to start channel equalization

This *may* be related to screen switching (undocking/docking of the notebook with an external monitor attached), but I am not sure at all.

Thank you very much for the information, and I apologize for not noticing the old BIOS. I have updated BIOS to the newest one:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
L77 Ver. 01.33
07/20/2015

I am not sure what causes this bug to reproduce, so I will wait for the bug to manifest on its own.
Thank you.

The issue reproduced again, some time after I have unplugged the notebook from the docking station, then connected, and finally disconnected the D-SUB vga connector. I should have the newest bios installed:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
L77 Ver. 01.33
07/20/2015

The relevant dmesg messages:
Notebook got disconnected from the docking station:

Then, after some time and after DSUB connect and disconnect:

Martin Vysny, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.
