Bug Description

After installing kernel 3.19.0-31, the system freezes at login. I got following error during install, I don't know if that is the reason for the freeze.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-headers-3.19.0-31 linux-headers-3.19.0-31-generic

Seems like smth with usb driver, because the mouse is hanging completely, cursor disappearing and right before the kernel Oops in syslog there are 4 lines like:

kernel: [ 36.631326] usb 2-1.4: 3:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x82

ep 0x82 is present in all 4 lines.

My system (15.04 Unity) doesn't freeze completely, but it certainly behaves badly. For example: Takes ages to log in, and the sound can't be enabled.

This kernel version should apparently be replaced ASAP.

I am getting a similar issue with Ubuntu 14.04 and kernel 3.19.0-31 on Lenovo T440p. The system freezes at login screen and can't be used after that only thing that can be done is a hard reset.

Works OK on the other hand with 3.19.0-30.

Had exactly the same problems as described here since this morning when kernel was updated to 3.19.0.31 via update-manager. My system is ubuntu 14.04 LTS. With the vivid kernel. Booting with the old kernel, 3.19.0.30, makes everything working again. But trying with 3.19.0.31 seems to totally hang everything after having logged in, unity doesnt display or actually i got it displayed one time but then i had no mouse and no control and ctrl alt f1 didnt work.
So I guess there is something terribly wrong with the -31 kernel.

This may be (or may be not!) a duplicate of bug #1503655. The issue has been identified in several kernel versions, and a fix has been uploaded. In the meantime, I've a test kernel that can be used to confirm if this is *really* the same bug.

People running Trusty (3.13 kernel) can try: http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1503655/t/amd64/
People running Vivid (3.19 kernel) can try: http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1503655/v/amd64/

Thanks!

Hi Luis!

I can confirm that version 3.19.0-31.36 fixes the issue on my vivid 64bits install. (The observations mentioned in comment #4 was from a vivid 32bits install.)

I don't see any linux package in the trusty or vivid upload queues. Or does it work differently with the kernel?

Same problem, but my crashing system's scapegoat was the wireless driver. Cue several hours of trying to figure out how to disable networking on my system before I just decided to go back a kernel version, and tada, it worked again.

I had the same problem and I solved it removing older kernels. For the safety keep at least two kernels, it's enough to the system.
