Xorg freezes on shutdown / restart

My Inspiron 640m laptop freezes if I use the shutdown or the restart button provided by gnome. I then see a black screen with white blinking symbols, and the computer does not respond anymore. If I use a Terminal to shutdown or reboot, it works just fine. The System is up to date, the problem occurs with and without battery, about half the time i try to shut down.

I forgot to say, that this affects Gutsy Gibbon. In Feisty or Edgy I did not have this problem.

I have a similar problem on my desktop.
When I click on the shutdown button X freezes for
about 60 seconds, before the window pops up
showing the log out, restart, shutdown options.
It only happens the first time
I do it. If I cancel the window when it pops up the second
time works fine.

I have a similar problem on Gutsy Gibbon (it was all right with Feisty and Edgy).

When I use any "shutdown button" :
  o the little red botton on the task bar,
  o the "System/Quit" menu,
  o the desktop shutdown button,
gdm seems to freeze (the only thing I can do is to move the mouse on the screen) for several minutes (4 to 5)...
 ( ctrl-alt-F1/F7 works fine)
... and the the "popup shutdown window" came to the screen.

And effectively, if I cancel this"pop-up window", the next time I activate any shutdown button it works fine (the pop-up came immediately)

Stef Kautin & scottmuz apear to have a separate issue from the original report, If this is still an issue, please open a new bug report.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that this is an older issue; is it still happening in the latest release 8.04 Hardy? If so, set the bug status to 'new' and leave a comment to signify that it is ready for triage / review. Otherwise if the issue has been fixed, please set the status to 'invalid'.
