Bug Description

ppa-purge is a very useful package when dealing with PPAs, and many PPAs say that you should use it in certain cases such as to remove them with it before an upgrade. So this really is a vital package to have if you use these sorts of PPAs on your system as many do. So unless there is a reason why it shouldn't be included by default, I think that it should.

Hi Nikita,

ppa-purge is just one command away from being installed. I don't see the harm of it being installed by default, but not everyone uses ppa packages. This can definitely be discussed when 16.04 development starts as it is a relatively small package (5Kb)

I don;t think we will install this by default, apart from the version being in the archives being completely broken, if you can add a ppa, you can install ppa-purge

Completely broken? I just think that it would be a useful tool for those who deal with PPAs, I mean if you will install the tools that allow to add them, why not the removal and management ones too?

Nikita, Try removing gnome3-staging ppa with the ppa-purge from the archives, it will remove half your system! I wrote some patches to fix that, but upstream never even reviewed them. When/if they ever they get merged into ppa-purge proper I would consider add it to the images but not before.

Tim, I'm sorry, I just wrote that script and havent looked at it in years and never could upload it to the archive myself, the person who did disappeared. I added you to the team, do what you want with it :)

I have also fixed a few bugs in ppa-purge based on current trunk and I am looking for a way to merge them. BTW Isn't ppa-purge a bit misleading name as it can remove not only PPAs' but also other repositories, besides it does not currently purge anything?

Jarno,
Create bzr branches with your fixes, and submit Merge proposals and I will take a look.

I suppose in the apt sense, it doesnt really purge anything, but I don't think that would be reason enough to change the name!

Tim,

I'll try.

Well, the script could be changed to purge in apt (and aptitude) sense.

No absolutely not, that would break user settings to no end. For the most part downgeading packages doesnt really affect things, pl there are the odd corner cases but still "purge" == damage-

I do not understand what you mean. If I have understood correctly, apt-get does not remove settings, if packages are downgraded. I think purging could be an option, at least.

apt-get purge will remove all conffiles, even though for the most part these are still compatible with the downgraded packages.
