Bug Description

Release 15.10 Wily Beta 2.
GPU R9 290. Hawaii Core.

When switching to fglrx from radeon, I get no graphics.

Scenario 1: Use the "Additional Drivers" push-button to change to fglrx ; do not create xorg.conf.

Result: On reboot, both the Displayport and DVI screens turn off ( disconnect ), and the keyboard becomes unresponsive ( caps lock and other toggles stop working ). Cannot switch to other VTs, but can use the Alt-PrtScrn(RSEINUB) safe reboot method.

Scenario 2: Use the "Additional Drivers" push-button to change to fglrx ; use amdconfig --initial to create xorg.conf.

Result: On reboot, both the Displayport and DVI screens remain active but blank, and the keyboard becomes unresponsive ( caps lock and other toggles stop working ). Cannot switch to other VTs, but can use the Alt-PrtScrn(RSEINUB) safe reboot method.

I originally had this behaviour when I tried to build Catalyst 15.9 ( which I think you are using in wily) from the AMD website against Ubuntu 15.04. I assumed there was a problem with Kernel DRM components, so I tried it in the wily beta in case the new kernel solver the issue, but have exactly the same result. This version of Wily beta 2 is installed from the DVD ISO, not upgraded from 15.04 ( although I did use the option to retain existing personal files ).

I doubt this is an Ubuntu-resolvable issue, but if it is an AMD issue you are more likely to get them to fix it than individual users.

Also running Wily with GPU Radeon HD7870 (Pitcairn), and see what appears to be the same issue as OP.

I have found that force compiling fglrx-core with gcc 4.9 seems to resolve the issue for me, but unfortunately I don't know why.

In any case, I will attach the patch against fglrx-installer that I created to work around the issue, which appears to restore full functionality for me.

I've downloaded your patch and applied it to the source code of `fglrx-updates-core` (or `fglrx-installer`) and created deb's file from the patched source code. I got 4 deb files and installed them and.. it works! Thanks for this patch :)
But now I have to freeze `fglrx-updates` and `fglrx-updates-core` because apt wants to update them via upgrade/dist-upgrade and I have no idea why.

Have you posted the .debs somewhere? If you have, would you mind letting me add that to a blog article I wrote yesterday?

You may PM me on Ubuntu Forums. I'm QIII there.

@Sergey, How did you build it? Debuild binary doesn't work for me (Ubuntu 15.10).

The patch also works for me!.
@Paolo, to build the driver do the following:
1. Download fglrx-installer-15.201_force-gcc_4.9.patch
2. Get the sources: apt-get source fglrx
2. cd fglrx-installer-15.201
3. patch -p1 < location/of/patch/fglrx-installer-15.201_force-gcc_4.9.patch
4. dpkg-buildpackage (you may have to install some dependencies)
5. In the debs: sudo dpkg -i ../fglrx*.deb
