Thanks for this advice.
A little early to tell as I never could generate the error.
But I did have a common symptom that being a drop down list in a browser
would yield a black square instead of the list then my window manger
would not react to mouse clicks or keyboard input.

I did the BIOS update you recommended.

I just had a black square on a drop down but my window manager is still
working properly.

By the way for us novices the documentation regarding BIOS updates is a
lot of words that do not lend much clarity to what you are suppose to
do. I suppose somewhere in the Asus manual it says something like the
recipe below but I never found it.

You might add a recipe like this:
      0. Read documentation then -
      1. Down load the latest BIOS version.
      2. Unzip the download.
      3. Copy the BIOS file to a usb Flashdrive.
      4. Shutdown your computer.
      5. Power up your computer.
      6. Press F2 when the Asus logo appears.
      7. Select Advanced in the Asus BIOS screen.
      8. Select EasyFlash
      9. Select your USB Flashdrive
     10. Press the Yes buttons to update BIOS

Feel free to stress test it a bit more to confirm no more xorg freezes.

>"By the way for us novices the documentation regarding BIOS updates is a lot of words that do not lend much clarity..."

Seemed pretty clear to me when I read it. Quoting:
"Asus provides within their BIOS a utility called Easy Flash. Please search the Asus website for instructions."

However, if your point is that it is not click-for-click instructions, this is how when it was a direct URL to the instructions on Asus's website, they decided to change the URL so it was replaced with the above to be robust to random URL changes.

Despite this, the Ubuntu help wiki is publicly editable. If you want more detail on it, feel free to add it as you encountered each screen as I don't have an Asus to confirm.

Shucks, replacement of bios did not fix.

Just happened again, but after 30 minutes of similar actions.
Did not do much work yesterday had other things to do.

Once again seems to be related to accessing a drop down data list in the
browser.
Not the identical symptom, previously at least twice symptom was access
the arrow to display a selection list so you can select from the list,
you get a black box instead of the list.
This time just pressed the arrow to get the list and window manager no
longer responds to mouse clicks or the key board. As before the mouse
icon does still move. As before I can shell in from another workstation
and reboot.

I previously thought that my browser had become damaged so I uninstalled
Chromium and installed Chrome from the web.

I have Firefox laying there I will switch usage and see if the bug is in
the browser logic.
Not irrational, as prior to the freeze I had done a dozen or so very
similar actions all involving drop down lists. Could be the browser is
not properly handling the memory with this feature.
