Did do an update a few days back and another after the freeze just in case already found and fixed.

Thanks for this advice.
A little early to tell as I never could generate the error.
But I did have a common symptom that being a drop down list in a browser
would yield a black square instead of the list then my window manger
would not react to mouse clicks or keyboard input.
I did the BIOS update you recommended.
I just had a black square on a drop down but my window manager is still
working properly.
By the way for us novices the documentation regarding BIOS updates is a
lot of words that do not lend much clarity to what you are suppose to
do. I suppose somewhere in the Asus manual it says something like the
recipe below but I never found it.
You might add a recipe like this:
0. Read documentation then -
1. Down load the latest BIOS version.
2. Unzip the download.
3. Copy the BIOS file to a usb Flashdrive.
4. Shutdown your computer.
5. Power up your computer.
6. Press F2 when the Asus logo appears.
7. Select Advanced in the Asus BIOS screen.
8. Select EasyFlash
9. Select your USB Flashdrive
10. Press the Yes buttons to update BIOS
