Bug Description

Hello,

Removing the HDMI cable on my ASUS UN42 results in EDID failure which might be only cosmetic, however inserting the cable again causes the crash of the whole GUI segfaulting several KDE daemons.

Manually restarting SDDM restores the GUI.

Addendum: This happens consistently using a KVM and switching from one system to another.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.3 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The issue started when I upgraded from wily. Booting the previous kernel solves the issue.

I tried with the latest 4.3 kernel and the problem seems to be fixed, both the EDID messages and the X11/GUI processes are not crashing anymore.

Christopher, I see you added a "bios-outdated" tag and I promptly updated the BIOS to 0802 however this specific issue wasn't fixed by the BIOS update.

Vihai, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.3-rc2 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

kay, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu repository kernel (not a third party kernel) via a terminal:
