Bug Description

The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem regarding update-notifier. This problem was most recently seen with version 3.162, the problem page at https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/24df4219486e1070eefdc813e7eebfde6ac02b1e contains more details.

This appears to be a bug deep in apt, showing up only with the update-notifier+libapt-pkg in wily.

First report of this problem to errors.ubuntu.com is on August 9, which strangely does not align with any uploads (or publications) of apt. 1.0.9.10ubuntu1 was published to wily release in May; 1.0.9.10ubuntu6 was published to wily-proposed on August 1, and published to wily release on August 16.

However, the three reports of this crash dated August 9 were all using 1.0.9.10ubuntu6 from -proposed. So this seems to be a regression between 1.0.9.10ubuntu1 and 1.0.9.10ubuntu6.

bug #1497534 is the same issue, that's currently ranked 15th on the e.u.c wily weekly view
