Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

Ubuntu Gutsy Beta: When I run VirtualBox, the fonts are big and ugly (not properly anti-aliased?). My install of VirtualBox (non-OSE) on Feisty 7.04 looks good, with fonts like in the rest of the system. Maybe a Qt problem? This is using the proprietary ATI fglrx driver.

I also noticed a change when I went from Feisty with the PUEL version from virtualbox.org to the Gutsy with the OSE version. Here's a screenshot from Gutsy.

OK, they no longer look horrible (anti-aliasing is in effect now), but still too large. See the attached screenshot.

And another, with subpixel smoothing turned on an ruining the VBox screen (while it clearly improves the rest of the system).

Ah, OK, I figured out what the problem is; virtualbox-ose depends on libqt3-mt to give it its 'look-and-feel' For some reason, that's not configured in the same way that regular KDE apps (e.g. konqueror) are in Ubuntu. If you install qt3-qtconfig and run "qtconfig" you can change the fonts, widgets, etc. (if you have Virtualbox running after changes have been made, restart it).

I don't know if there's a way to set libqt3-mt apps to use Gnome's settings. I'll have to look into that...

I was able to reproduce the issue and find a sub-optimal way to deal with the problem.

Ah, now I'm making progress! I read on
http://my.opera.com/area42/blog/unique-look-ubuntu-look
that you can give QT3 apps a human look-and-feel by getting this file:
http://files.myopera.com/area42/files/qtrc
and (slightly different from the instructions he gave), use it to replace the one in ~/.qt

Screenshot attached :-)

I have also this problem with large fonts and icons in VirtualBox controler, but inside virtualbox windows.

running kcontrol has been good for me, to setup fonts size.
