Bug Description

When set to two mins or more, the screen dims for 10 secs then goes off.

(I also thought the intended time on dim was 15 secs or more not 10, its a bit too quick to react to)

unity8 doesn't have any part on setting the timings nor on doing the actual dimming (AFAIK)

That's sort of a side effect of bug #1437510, if u-s-c was doing the "dim before blank" rather than having different settings to tweak we wouldn't have this issue.

The settings code is
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~system-settings-touch/ubuntu-system-settings/trunk/view/head:/plugins/battery/SleepValues.qml#L56

what value do you have for the gsettings key "com.ubuntu.touch.system dim-timeout" if you select one minute? If that's correctly 50 then the issue is not a settings one...

so system notification dimming/time out is different than unlocked phone user-inactivity time out.
I assume you mean user-inactivity time out

the way it _should_ work today is that after 15 seconds it dims, after an additional 45 seconds it blanks.
so i'd agree this is a bug, but we have a document [1] we've been capturing a variety of issues in with the design team - they've indicated they want to add a system setting for an additional timer for actual screen blanking time. So this will change. I'd like to defer this bug until we get a clear way forward with the design team. We can use this bug to track.

I haven't returned to the screen blanking issue yet, but I very much doubt that it will affect screen dimming at all.

If the purpose of screen dimming is to warn you that the screen is about to blank (giving you a chance to cancel it), then -- as Ken VanDine said in bug 1437510 -- it should always happen 10 seconds before the screen blanks. There should be no separate setting for it.

If the purpose of screen dimming is *not* to warn you that the screen is about to blank, then what is it for? Why would you want the screen to be at one brightness level for 15 seconds, and another brightness level for 45 seconds?

is this waiting on the new spec? seems an obvious bug fix to make it work like "two mins"

It shouldn't be waiting for a spec. "For ten seconds before the session locks automatically, the display should dim, to warn you that the lock is about to happen, giving you a chance to cancel it. Any input, including volume buttons, should cancel the lock and therefore restore the display." <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SessionHandling#Lock> And there's nothing in the "Screen Blanking Requirements" to contradict that.

Still busted and we recommend 1 min for security

Since the latest Ubuntu release this issue has been resolved for me and now I can have my timeout set to 1 minute and the screen turns dark before locking.
