Cannot switch to VT from Xorg (Gutsy)

Bug Description

I'm getting a black VT screen when switching from Xorg to VT1-6

I'm perfectly able to return to X without corruption, but the VT is unusable.

I'm not sure if it is something related with Xorg, fglrx or even usplash.

Adding vga=791 to defoptions in /boot/grub/menu.lst resolved the black screen part

But there's no login prompt, only a "_" character in every VT

I'm sure getty is working:
root 4980 1 0 09:50 tty4 00:00:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty4
root 4981 1 0 09:50 tty5 00:00:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty5
root 4983 1 0 09:50 tty2 00:00:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty2
root 4984 1 0 09:50 tty3 00:00:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty3
root 4985 1 0 09:50 tty1 00:00:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

I am having this problem with hardy heron BETA, with nvidia graphics. Not only can I not switch to the console, I cannot see any messages when the system reboots / shuts down.

On my system (Hardy Heron BETA, amd64, nvidia-glx-new video) here are the symptomos I am having:
vga=791 - no problem.
vga=792 - after gdm starts, text is all black on black (you can tell the flashing cursor moves as you input or reboot though).
