GDM restarts X on logout

Bug Description

When you log out of gnome, GDM (I presume) restarts the X server, even if AlwaysRestartServer=false is set in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. This is a problem because gnome has a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/120819) that requires logging out and in again within one X session to fix. This means that dual monitor support with twinview can't work. Basically, I need an option to stop GDM restarting X when you log out (or, for someone to fix the bug that makes this a problem, but I suspect this'll be easier)

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the development version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron?

Thanks in advance.

It still occurs in hardy. Less of an issue for me now, since I found a workaround for the problems it was causing, but it does still happen.

Could you try if that's still an issue in karmic?

I am using Karmic.
This may have been fixed. I am unsure.
The screen goes black for 2 seconds or so, but I don't know whether there is any mode switch, there might not be.
I see no black text.

I still see the flicker (and sometimes text) when I log out in Karmic. It should just smoothly transition back to the gdm.

I have an NVidia card.
