Bug Description
When a unit changes name / changes "main" IP all data seem to be lost since it's stored for the name I guess.
It would be nice to have a procedure (even a command line tool) to merge the old data into the new unit's data.

I assume you are speaking about Graphite metrics here, not "data" in general. Nothing in the relational database gets lost because of a name change.
Graphite offers no API to rename metrics, which means this must be done manually on your Graphite server, wherever that server may be located. In the case of a device rename, you would only need to rename the directory containing the tree of Whisper files for that device.
If you have been collecting data under the new name for so long that you do not want to lose this new data, you would have to use the whisper-merge tool to merge the matching files from each directory tree.
