[Quadro FX 370] Compiz freezes entire desktop on Wily

Bug Description

On Wily using Google calendar, Facebook Google+ and other Untity Web Apps Compiz freezes the desktop, cannot do anything than reboot from termina (CTRL+ALT+F1).
It also happened using Oracle VirtualBox, but not sure it was the real reason for the freeze.

@Fabio, yes I am still affected and it happens quite often.
Looks like nouveau driver problem but do not know how to solve this issue, it's quite frustrating as it happens often and my PC freezes and have to reboot, or kill compiz process.

Today is released a new kernel, please do the upgrade and let's see if it fix.
Is this Wily a fresh installation or an upgrade ?
If it is an upgrade can you try starting an older working kernel ?
If it is a fresh installation would you like to test the latest release of the kernel from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-next/

Also,if you are in accord, you can temporarily workaround the issue installing the propretary drivers via:
Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers
so we can be sure that is a nouveau problem.

Hello Fabio,
I installed Kernel 4.2.0-996 as you suggested. I will wait a couple of days to see what happens and then let you know.
As for the propretary drivers I could try, but I would prefer to solve the issue with nouveau as I prefer to use open source drivers.
Anyway if the problem is not solved with Kernel 4.20.-996 I will try them.

Hello Fabio,
Looks like it's much better now. I have not had major issues and looks like I am working fine.
I waited more days to be sure the issue didn't occur again.
So for me this bug has been solved with kernel 4.2.0-996 (or maybe even Ubuntu updates, not sure, I have also updated my system daily).

It happened again! Compiz occupied 100% of CPU for quite long, about 3-4 minutes I think. Everything was freezed, had to wait quite a bit to get back to working desktop.
Mouse pointer was moving, but couldn't click non anything.
Cannot understand what triggers these freezes.
At this point to me looks a bit a random thing.

It's happening again, last time it was maximizing Virtualbox window. Compiz process occupies 100% CPU and desktop freezes.

Hallo Carla
well, I suggest to give a try to the latest propretary nvidia drivers and see how the kernel works with them.
Then we will be able to understand if it is a linux or nouveau problem.
So go on in this way, remove the three packages of the kernel 4.2.0-996 via synaptic (searching for linux they will be listed), once done reboot in the stock kernel.
Install the propretary drivers via software & updates or if you are familiar follow this guide to install the lastests released by nvidia: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual.
Remember to backup important things ....
Marking as affecting nouveau as I cannot see anything related to compiz in my system so it is likely something hardware related.

Hallo Carla
I had a talk with a nouveau dev. that tells me that the fail set domain error is a sort of OOM specific to video cards and in this case the memory of the card is few so it run out, but on the other hand he admitted that nouveau would have to better handle it.
Then we keep valid the report but the fix will not be the nexts...
Please update the report if you still having problems with nvidia drivers too.

Same here on G84GLM [Quadro FX 1600M].
I will let you know if v4.3-rc7-unstable which contains the fix for https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92504 will solve the issue.

Considering that Xenial uses Linux 4.4 and the patch to fix this issue was in Linux 4.3-rc7, I'm going to assume this is fixed. I am just an Ubuntu user (not a developer) so please revert if I am incorrect.
