Blank screen (instead of splash screen) during boot on Thinkpad T60 with Radeon graphics

During the boot of Ubuntu 15.04 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T60, I don't see a splash screen. The boot sequence is GRUB -> blank screen -> login screen but it should be GRUB -> splash screen -> login screen.

I asked about this on Launchpad answers ( https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/270270 ) and was told to file a bug report if this wasn't a duplicate. Apologies in advance if it is one; I wasn't able to find a matching report with the search function. I hope that this is the right package, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#During_boot seems to suggest plymouth is for splash screen related bugs.

If I reconfigure GRUB to not use a splash screen (by using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" in /etc/default/grub), I have correct output (i.e. I see the text messages).

This is fixed for me in Ubuntu 15.10.
