Bug Description

I have got ubuntu 14.04 64bit, fully upgraded with utopic LTS enablement stack. I try to install vivid LTS enablement running this command:

 sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid

as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

The output I receive is:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

I think others are suffering from the same issue because there are questions posted on askubuntu (http://askubuntu.com/questions/657919/install-packages-from-lts-hardware-enablement-stack-for-ubuntu-14-04-3-has-unmet)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1483631/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I suspect the package upgrade is failing because of the dependencies of libegl1-mesa-lts-vivid.

When I added, libqt5gui5 libgles1-mesa-lts-vivid libgles2-mesa-lts-vivid libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-vivid, it worked and installed all the dependicies.

I suspect libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-vivid is enough (not 100% sure yet though, only about 65%)

Also, in the comment line, xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid are not necessary since they are dependencies of xserver-xorg-lts-vivid, I don't know why the community wiki keeps mentioning them

Louwtjie, Peter, did you happen to have Skype installed (from the partner repository) when you tried upgrading the HWE stack? When upgrading from Vivid's to Wily's X server, I've noticed skype-bin:i386 recurse-depends on a few libgl*-mesa-*-lst-vivid:i386 libraries. In my case, removing Skype and autoremoving everything it recurse-depends on made it possible to run the official command line unaltered.

(Subscribing you to this bug just so you get this question, sorry)

Also, not sure this bug is a dup of 1479251, it's not the same error message

Indeed, I had Skype installed and when I got the upgrade to work, I had to reinstall Skype.

Thanks for the feedback, I think the culprit may have something to do with (or perhaps be a reverse-depends of?) one of the libgl*-mesa-*-lts-<release>:i386 libraries skype recurse-depends on, then:

libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-<release>:i386
libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-<release>:i386
libglapi-mesa-lts-<release>:i386

where <release> is the release of the currently used X server, when trying to upgrade to the X server of the next release

If you use "sudo apt-get install libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-vivid linux-image-generic-lts-vivid libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-vivid:i386" the upgrade path will be properly calculated. Given that the vivid HWE stack is no longer receiving updates and people will be recommended to upgrade to the xenial HWE stack, I'm going to set this to Won't Fix.
