this appears to be caused by a large stroke-width, which is affecting the overall scaling of the display. Attached is a snippet from one path which has a large stroke width.

<path
   sodipodi:type="arc"
       style="fill:none;stroke:#7865fa;stroke-width:16064501688924049408"
           id="path13278-6"

 The stroke width is roughly about the size of 2^64. I am not sure if it is significant, but I have found only three paths with large strokes like this, and all three have the declaration:
sodipodi:type="arc". The other paths with normal stroke do not have this declaration.

attached is a reduced test case.

Attaching another (reduced) test case (the drawing was originally shared on #irc earlier today) - the file was created with Inkscape 0.91, and exposes the same symptoms after some unfortunate (but unknown) editing steps caused a huge stroke width on two star objects.

Note that the presence of such stroke width values also breaks outline view mode (even if the actual rendering of the strokes has been turned off via palette and rendering is ok in regular view mode again).

Based on tests with archived builds (on OS X 10.7.5):
- not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040,
- not reproduced with lp:inkscape rev <= 10578,
- reproduced with lp:inkscape rev >= 10579,
- reproduced with Inkscape 0.91 r13725,
- reproduced with lp:inkscape/0.92.x rev 15301;
the reported symptom (blank canvas triggered by geometry/computed dimension of a single element) seems to have been exposed with the merge of the rendering cache branch in r10579:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/changes/10579
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/revision/10579

Similar symptoms have been reported in: bug #1565174, bug #1653694.
