Thanks for your bug report. Could you try to get a valgrind log for the crash (you can follow the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind)?

doesn't replicate under valgrind.
i have developed some steps for replication tho.
start gimp
file > preferences
theme (set to small)
default image
(boom)

attaching valgrind log just incase it is still useful or something
