Gaetano, purtroppo è un noto problema di intergrazione tra gnome e compiz.
Prova a disabilitare gli effetti 3d e dovresti avere nuovamente la possibilità di aumentare il numero di "scrivanie" a disposizione.

looking for the exact number require some work and the triagers are usually overworked so it would be nice if users could take that in account and look for duplicates

I believe this bug as some others fall under the category
"embarrassing". There are a certain number of bugs in Ubuntu, which fall
under that category and make the OS look "unpolished".

I believe we need to add a feature to the bug tracking system to
identify these bugs, so people who want to make Ubuntu look more
professional can more easily track down, what they need to lay their
hands on.

I therefore proposed a feature to allow the community to either add tags
to bug reports or vote on the "embarrassment" factor: bug #149775.

If any of you believe this would be a healthy feature for Ubuntu, please
add your comment to bug #149775.
