Aurel Branzeanu, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. To see if this already resolved, could you please test http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?

Hello, Cristian!

Sorry for late answer, I don't know why I hadn't received by e-mail the notification about your message.

I have tried today the latest daily image of 15.10 in a VirtualBox - everything was running smoothly until I have installed the VB Guest Additions - then the image is booting, but every try to barely move a window silently crashes the VM.

Not to forgot that the host machine freezes - too. Observed that especially often the crashes are occuring when running some Qt4 based applications as Dropbox, Skype, VirtualBox.

I think it is nouveau-drm driver causing the freezes - I am attaching a file with a kernel oops from syslog which I'm getting right before the freezes.

Aurel Branzeanu, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Tested on mainline generic kernel v4.2-rc3-unstable:

5 tests restarting the machine and launching Dropbox + big file copy to ntfs partition + Firefox - the issue is gone.

Aurel Branzeanu, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.1.2 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

Christopher, I have tested also the 3.19.1-vivid and 3.19-vivid mainline kernels - no hangs. But as soon as I am booting the Ubuntu specific 3.19.0-24-generic - the hang occured right on the first boot.

Aurel Branzeanu, it appears to be a Ubuntu specific (i.e. downstream) issue.

Aurel Branzeanu, the definition of fixed upstream is it's a downstream only issue.
