Satyapriyananda, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X553MA/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (211). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch),

Many many thanks for your quick and very helpful suggestion which I shall keep close to my heart.

The ASUS laptop was purchased for a monastic brother who is a novice in computer parlance.

I have set up the laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 and updates so far. So he has LibreOffice (with British English spelling check), excel, etc. I have installed GIMP if at all he will ever use Image editing. I have installed Youtube-dl so he can download. Then I have given him the important VLC for seeing videos and listening to songs and prayer music.

I have ordered for a wireless optical mouse so that the only available two USB ports can be of use to him.

The card reader and wireless are active. So this is all he will probably need.

Against this backdrop, there is the fear of my getting the motherboard screwed up and winding up in additional expenses. So I will reserve the BIOS update until when the user monk is keen on using Bluetooth enabled devices.

Many many thanks once again. I was hoping that there could be a very simple solution. I have spent quite some time with the internet! Suggestions were plenty but nothing promising. If I can find where to do it, I shall mark the status as confirmed as suggested.
