Bug Description

Compiz Fusion momentarily freezes while doing regular desktop oriented tasks. Animation stops and in 3-5 seconds continues. No pattern.

Where you running a CPU intensive process when this happened?

No. It stops in the middle of common tasks. In fact I leave a cpu and
network monitor on my top panel. I don't REMEMBER seeing any unusual
activity. I am running a Turion 64 x2 dual 2x1.8 ghz on 32 bit Gutsy. It is
a Laptop. HP Pavilion w/ Geforce Go 6150 shared memory graphics. Also a SCSI
hard drive. 1024 GB ram. On every release of Ubuntu so far I have had to add
the NOAPIC NOLAPIC option at initial boot. In the last 6 mos i have never
experienced this with Feisty.

I am having a similar bug but it happens even compiz is turned off. Are you sure this is compiz related ?

I have just tested it with compiz turned off. Apparently its a generic thing. I have attached a little python program that causes the behavior. When you mouse over the menu, everything should freeze for 10 seconds.

I have the same problem on my computer, however, it usually occurs when I get back on my computer after having been away from it for a while (several hours); it almost always freezes in such circumstances and does also occasionally freeze when I'm in the middle of doing something. I'm not sure what exactly causes the freeze; currently, I'm running the most recent Compiz update & 64bit Gutsy beta on an MSI K8N Neo4-F motherboard, an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (single core) CPU, and 2Gb of PC3200 RAM (in case it is somehow hardware related).

Regarding my above comment, I also am using an Nvidia GeForce 7300GS video card with the nvidia-glx-new, driver version 100.14.19.

Please remove this bug for me. The issue was the default 'on demand' cpu
scaling policy in ubuntu. When I turn up the cpu speed everything runs
smoothly. Thanks.

I really think its an compiz bug, disabling the compiz animation plugin fixed it.

I had the same issue with Ubuntu Edgy and compiz, but never with beryl. Also I have the same effect when using an ATI x800 based video card and radeon or fglrx video drivers.

I also suggest labeling this as a bug in compiz.

Bug is not reproducable, leaving the PC idle for some time seems to increase the probability. I have subscribed this launchpad entry, so if I can do something for a developer (e.g. get logs or try patches), please post here.

I also tried the Compiz version which is in gutsy-backports, but that did not help.

My original problem with occasional 'compiz lag' was due to the poor
performance of the 'On Demand' feature that is default with cpu scaling. I
did a sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets after i placed the cpu speed
applet on the panel. That allowed me to turn up the juice and i haven't had
a problem since. My bug should be removed.
