partitions spontaneously renamed

Bug Description

A few weeks ago I migrated an ubuntu installation to a new disk. I partitioned it (using qtparted if I remember correctly) with / on /dev/hde6 and swap on /dev/hde5. /dev/hde5 ended up coming after /dev/hde6 on the disk.

This worked fine for several weeks until one day grub gave me error 17. / was now on /dev/hde5 and swap on /dev/hde6. This also meant that the UUIDs for each partition changed. I had to boot from a live CD and update /boot/grub/menu.lst in a text editor. Most computer users would not know how to do that.

If numbering the partitions in the wrong order is inherently problematic, then parted should either refuse to do it, or it should offer to renumber the partitions for you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I fixed this in the end. It turned out that I needed to change something
after the single hashes in grub.conf (the special debian stuff in the
comments) to make sure that the installer would know what to do. I don't
have time right this minute to check it out, but I think it should be
fairly obvious what it was I needed to change. If not then please post
another message and I will check it out properly and let you know.
