Using Ubuntu 15.04
 check and update every day
This scanner has been functioning commanded by PC and by scanner panel buttons for many months but now hangs with a grey screen and red note "failed to scan Unable to connect to scanner"
I have tried al sorts but mostly up against a brick wall for the last few weeks.
Printer operates properly.

David Oxland, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases your release is EOL.

At the time of writing this, these 3 packages need to be downloaded and installed.

libsane-common_1.0.26~git20151121-1_all.deb
libsane_1.0.26~git20151121-1_amd64.deb
libjpeg62-turbo_1.5.1-1_amd64.deb

The first two packages can be found in the Debian experimental libs at this link https://packages.debian.org/experimental/libs/

The last package I found in this link https://packages.debian.org/sid/libjpeg62-turbo

In some cases you may need to navigate to an ftp mirror site to actually download. Once downloaded, simply install each package as root i.e sudo dpkg -i package

I have tested with simple-scan, xsane, and scangearmp and all works fine.

My problem now fixed by going very carefully through the brother brscan4 instructions.
They are quite lengthy and call for a # of preconditions to be met.
 Successfully installed and in service.
This, after an upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04.

David Oxland, to clarify, what instructions did you use specifically (help.ubuntu.com, man page, Brother's website, etc.)?
