Cannot install on ubuntu

Bug Description

Environment
-------------------
Ubuntu Server 15.04
Wicd 1.7.3

python setup.py configure
...
python setup.py install
Using init file ('/etc/init.d/', 'init/debian/wicd')
error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'gnome-shell'

wonder why the huge bug fixes released as 1.7.3 (dec 2014) has not been pushed to the archives yet. Wily still has the 1.7.2.

May be it can be valuable that I'm having the same thing in Kubuntu, so I don't have a gnome-shell in the first place

As a workaround one can use:
./setup.py configure --no-install-gnome-shell-extensions && ./setup.py build && ./setup.py install

Yes, that workaround worked almost perfectly:

I uninstalled all related ubuntu packages (but kept the configuration files):
- wicd
- wicd-gtk
- wicd-daemon
- python-wicd

I then installed 1.7.3 following your advices and rebooted.
Wicd now asks for the root password which is no problem.

However, an error window popped up with the following message:
"Could not connect to wicd D-Bus interface"
