Bug Description

I have the DELL XPS13 laptop which came factory pre-installed with Ubuntu 14.04. I changed the desktop to Ubuntu Mate. This had the Window Manager "Marco (Simple desktop effects)" activated.

Whenever I went into Suspend, the laptop did resume, but the desktop was not redrawn, no panels, no menus and submenus, no buttons. When I moved the mouse pointer over the places where I assumed the elements to be, some of them did show up, and were clickable. After a reboot, all was normal.

WORKAROUND: System > Control Center > MATE Tweak > Windows > Window Manager from Marco to Compiz.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.1 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

This laptop is very new, and I see several (proprietary ?) workarounds being factory-installed, and not available from repositories. I need this laptop in the coming weeks, and I am very reluctant to risk bricking it by toying with new kernels.

Furthermore, since the suspend fails to work with Marco, but does work with Compiz on one-and-the-same kernel, I don't even see the evidence for this being a kernel problem?

By the way, your link at the end is dead.

Ohh, Jeez, what have I gotten into with this laptop - my advice: if you want it for something else than tinkering with kernels and drivers, look elsewhere! And I thought, when it comes with a DELL installed system, it will work. Slapping myself ...

As so many things I so far have taken for granted don't work, I thought it is not a problem to ruin the laptop with untested kernels. So here we go, with Ubuntu-Mate still being my desktop:

Kernel 4.1.0-040100rc3-generic :
Marco and Compiz do both work correctly after a resume from suspend
(but even after some - not all - cold boots, I had no cursor on the desktop. happened with both Marco and Compiz)

With this kernel, there is no wireless at all! With the original kernel 3.13.0-52 I had at least 5GHz, but now there is neither 2.4 nor 5, Though the proprietary Broadcom STA driver is still installed and marked as active! Bluetooth does not recognize any devices, and even the laptop, with its BT adapter name set to "always visible", is not seen by other computers.

Kernel 3.16.0-37-generic:
Marco does NOT work after resume from suspend, Compiz does. Same behaviour as with original kernel. At least wireless is working on 5GHz (but not on 2.4GHz). Bluetooth not working at all and there is no driver under Additional Driver and non is offered to install.

Kernel 3.13.0-52-generic (the one I started with)
Wireless still only on 5GHz, BT not connecting to anything - though it is behaving as if it does work. On some boots even the keyboard and the touchpad isn't working, though an external usb-mouse is.

What a mess!

adding tags ? How does one do that?

Due to various other bugs on this DELL laptop I have upgraded to Ubuntu MATE 15.04 (VIvid), using kernel 3.19.0-18-generic.

The problem still exists: after Suspend with Marco the desktop is distorted. After Suspend with Compiz, the desktop is ok.

This installation offers to kernels to boot: one is marked "3.19.0-18-generic (upstart)" and the other "3.19.0-18-generic". I guess the latter is using systemd.

Resume from suspending under Marco fails on both, and under Compiz succeeds on both.

Another problem, bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1458327

When using Marco, I can connect to an external monitor, as one would expect. However, using Compiz, both screens go black on connection.

So, can have either working suspend, but no external monitor with Compiz, or a working external monitor, but no suspend with Marco :-(
