New update in ubuntu 14.04 (ubuntu base).
Error apparently is that "pulseaudio daemon is not running" (it should be: listed in ps -A).

It looks like something is wrong with your /etc/default/console-setup file. What is the md5sum of /etc/default/console-setup?

I suspect something got uncommented that should not have been.

This is the problematic line:

ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-3]"3]"3]"t here your encoding. Valid charmaps are: UTF-8 ARMSCII-8 CP1251

the parts after the quote are supposed to be a comment. So change it to the following:

ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-3]"
# Put here your encoding. Valid charmaps are: UTF-8 ARMSCII-8 CP1251
