Bug Description

After updating to vivid, I'm experiencing lockups when visiting certain pages (not sure if it's flash-enabled) with chromium-browser.

I see the following in the syslog matching the corresponding time (but don't know whether it's the cause):

May 5 11:11:42 michael-acer kernel: [16951.714263] [drm:intel_set_cpu_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared fifo underrun on pipe A
May 5 11:11:42 michael-acer kernel: [16951.714344] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun
May 5 11:11:49 michael-acer org.freedesktop.Notifications[1833]: ** (notify-osd:2671): WARNING **: dnd_is_screensaver_active(): Got error "Did
not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, th
e reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."
May 5 11:11:52 michael-acer dbus[759]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher' unit='dbus-org.freedesktop

Let me know if I can provide more info.

FWIW, I've switched back to Chromium after installing 16.04 on the same machine, to see if I can reproduce it with the Xenial kernel, and it's been 4 days without any such lockups.

Michael Nelson: has 16.04 solved this issue?

Michael Nelson (michael.nelson) wrote :

@francis-regan: I'm still getting issues with Chromium on 16.04, but I don't see the same (fifo_underrun) error. So it's likely that it was solved.

What I see now (only just checked the logs) are messages like:

Mar 23 08:27:11 hpmor kernel: [20182.144009] [drm] stuck on render ring
Mar 23 08:27:11 hpmor kernel: [20182.145137] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 7:0:0x7ecffd67, in chromium-browse [2306], reason: Ring hung, action: reset
Mar 23 08:27:11 hpmor kernel: [20182.147336] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang

but that's likely a separate bug. Other similar messages mention that it could be a userspace issue too:
Mar 23 10:11:18 hpmor kernel: [ 4448.875191] [drm] stuck on render ring
Mar 23 10:11:18 hpmor kernel: [ 4448.876441] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 7:0:0x85dfbff8, in chromium-browse [2320], reason: Ring hung, action
: reset
Mar 23 10:11:18 hpmor kernel: [ 4448.876444] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
Mar 23 10:11:18 hpmor kernel: [ 4448.876445] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
