Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Gutsy 32-bit LiveCD Beta (20070925.2) on Sony Vaio SRX51P with Intel i810 video.

When GDM starts the backlight is lit but no display. Able to switch to VT consoles (which are displayed and are interactive) and back. Using "ps" and checking logs indicates GDM is running and Xorg.0.log reports the "intel" driver loading, and no obvious faults.

I tried:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I gave mostly default answers, aside from selecting the "simple" monitor detection. When GDM was started there was a 640x480 display in the center of the (1024x768) LCD panel. I tried using Screens and Graphics" to adjust settings but was unable to get a resolution change after selecting "LCd Panel 1024x768" and "1024x768" resolution - 'S & G' appeared to crash out (just disappeared) when I pressed "OK".

Doing a further

$sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

And choosing the "Advanced" monitor configuration option I set:

Horizontal Frequencies: 28-64
Vertical Frequencies: 43-60
Resolutions: 1024x768
Colour Depth: 24

When started, GDM correctly uses the entire LCD panel and 1024x768x24bpp.

Attaching xorg.conf of reconfigured server.

LiveCD fails to start GDM / X

tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" but no success. It stops after:

* Running local boot scripts(/etc/rc.local) [OK]

Mathew, I think your issue may be unrelated (maybe bug 127101). Can you test against Gutsy-final, in which we fixed 127101?

It sounds like TJ's problem is that his monitor was not detected/configured properly, and dexconf used these default settings:

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Generic Monitor"
 Option "DPMS"
 HorizSync 30-70
 VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]"
 Monitor "Generic Monitor"
 DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Whereas when reconfigured, it discovered it as this:
Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "LCD Panel 1024x768"
 Option "DPMS"
 HorizSync 28-64
 VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]"
 Monitor "LCD Panel 1024x768"
 DefaultDepth 24
 SubSection "Display"
  Modes "1024x768"
 EndSubSection
EndSection

TJ, can you please attach the output of `sudo ddcprobe` and `lspci -vvnn`? Then we can verify that the EDID info is getting communicated correctly, and ensure the pci ids are listed in discover.

Can you retest with Hardy Alpha 2 or 3 and report if the problem still exists? If so, we need to open a freedesktop bugzilla. Thanks.

Please test with Hardy alpha4 livecd. We need to know if it's fixed or not.

I have opened a new bug here (tested with Hardy alpha 4 livecd): (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/191000).

Maybe it is linked, as it is the same kind of graphics card (it's not a laptop, in my case).

Hardy Heron Alpha5 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the Intel driver. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha5 Live CD from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-5/ . If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha5 .

I cannot verify as my Mac mini is not reading some of the CDs, that includes LiveCD. Strange behavior, it only plays few audio CDs. Sorry. Looks like need to change the CD drive. :(

I have the same problem with my mac mini 1.83 core 2 duo; intel 945 GM graphic controler + Apple Studio Display. I tried with Hardy alpha 6. I see the Ubuntu splash and the progress bar; when the bar is full, the screen goes black; after a while, I hear the chime, but I get no video output. I tried with several linux distros (SuSE, gentoo, Ubuntu). I got a working video with the gentoo live CD, but when I installed gentoo, I had no video output. If there is any more information I should provide, please let me know.

@Mathew Chacko and tomschmitz
Since this bug report is for i815 chipset only I would create a new one. Please try also the failsafe mode and post your results.

Sorry, I'm new to this business, but I'll try and open a new bug report. Meanwhile, I tried with "failsafe graphics mode" and got exactly the same result: after the progress bar finishes, I see a blinking underscore for a second, the screen flickers once or twice, then goes black. I was able to switch to another VT and get the Xorg.0.log, which doesn't show any errors; gnome appears to be running properly. I attach the Xorg.0.log and the output of lsmod.

Based on comment #10, this seems to be an instance of bug 194760. Please see the description of that bug for background.

TJ, could you run `sudo get-edid > edid.dat` and then post that file (it's a binary, so be careful to attach it, not paste it).

Bryce, Do you want the test with the Gutsy LiveCD or Hardy? The output is the same as I posted in comment #10.

I've got a related bug posted for Hardy: Bug #198521 "Hardy regression: i810 video incorrect size; cursor paints blocks" which I suspect is related.

For Hardy, the read-edid package has problems:

get-edid > hardy-beta-SRX51-EDID.dat
get-edid 2>&1 > hardy-beta-SRX51-EDID.dat

both create a zero-length file and output text directly to the terminal despite the stdout/stderr redirection.

Also, the output of get-edid is TEXT, not binary:

get-edid: get-edid version 1.4.1
