I'm also affected by this bug.

The icon does not show up and when I hit the close button pidgin exists directly. With older KDE versions the close button just sent pidgin to the tray.

Would be great if this gets fixed :)

Besides lack of icon in systray, icon of pidgin does not show notification of getting new message in icons-only task manager mod.
Skype or another software works fine with it.

This bug also affects me. Running Kubuntu 15.04 and I definitely do have Pidgin set to Always show && not hidden in the tray.
