Bug Description
Binary package hint: partman-auto-loop
Disk images need to be contiguous (as much as possible) with disk space pre-allocated. The only way to do that in linux I am aware of, is to use dd if=/dev/zero, but that is slow for large images. Apparently though, using the default bs=4k, things get quite speedier (thanks to Szabolcs Szakacsits for the tip).
