Bug Description

I have a slightly old laptop and I thought I would try running Widelands on it. I downloaded the install executable for Windows from the https://wl.widelands.org/wiki/Download/ page and clicked through to install from the widelands-build18-win32.exe file. (I think I needed to Run As Administrator to get the install to work).

I then started up Widelands from the start menu. The initial splash screen loads fine and displays the "Press ESC or click to continue..." message. When I click the next screen loads but none of the buttons have text visible on them. When I move the mouse over the window the game exits or crashes. This behaviour was repeatable each time I tried.

-- A Word Around --
I tried running in a few compatibility modes but that did not help. When I set the "Run in 256 colors" option I was able to load the game and see the main menu correctly. I say correctly, the colours were all wrong but it worked. I tried changing a few in game settings and restarting without the '256 colors' setting to see if things could be improved. I discovered that unselecting "OpenGL Rendering" under the Options > Advanced menu allowed me to start the game without the '256 colors' option set.
-----------------------------

Once I have the game running, choosing OpenGL Rendering again causes it to crash once it reaches the main menu again. I have attached stdout-enabled-opengl.txt which was taken just after I caused a crash by enabling OpenGL rendering again. This then makes it impossible to set the option persistently through the GUI (a good thing). That limits my ability to exactly reproduce it though.

As this looks like it might be related to eithey my Windows setup or hardware, here are all the details I can find.

Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7500
4GB RAM
HP Compaq 6910p laptop
Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Display Adapter, Driver Date 23.09.2009, version 8.15.10.1930
DxDiag says I have DirectX 11
Approx 358 MB video memory
I am no sure how to check OpenGL versions but I have faint memories that Microsoft has not updated the standard ones in ages and I don't have any drivers installed other than the standard Intel ones. That probably makes it the Windows default version.

Could you please try one of the current development builds?

https://wl.widelands.org/wiki/Download/#windows_1

A lot has happened since then (e.g. we switched from SDL to SDL2), so the bug might already be fixed.

Certainly. I will set myself a reminder to try it this evening.

I downloaded, installed and started up Widelands-bzr7445-nomusic-win64.exe

I can no longer choose OpenGL rendering from the Options > Advanced menu. That makes verifying the bug is gone rather difficult. I can say that nothing has caused the system to crash yet and that is probably the more important thing.

On the basis that the newer executable seems to be fixed, I'll mark this as Fix Committed.

You can't choose OpenGL any longer, because it is now default. The software rendering has been removed for build-19.

I think this is the first bug I have ever reported to Launchpad that got fixed. Congratulations!
