Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.0 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Additon to my comment above:

Did not notice, but has there been a kernel update in between? The issue seems to be fixed on my system...

Kernel installed: 3.19.0-15-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 16 23:32:37 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Nothing else done by me to get the issue fixed, kind of strange but maybe i missed that a new kernel was installed or anything else was updated.

I'm having similar issue. I'm on 3.19.0-15-generic kernel but boot with systemd fails. I tried 4.0 mainline kernel (linux-image-4.0.0-040000-generic_4.0.0-040000), with which system booted but I cound not see lightdm prompt, only [ok] messages are shown. Though I can switch to other terminal (ALT+CTRL+F2) and check logs on 4.0 kernel.
