The clock in the status bar is invisible

I did a fresh install and discovered that the time in the status bar was being
show in Urdu (Pakistan), so I went ahead and changed that. Logged out
and back in to discover that while it was no longer displaying in Urdu, it
wasn't showing time in English either. The clock became invisible

There's just about a character's worth of space that if I click just right, the
calendar pops down. A few pixels to the left, or a few to the right and it does
not. If I remember right, the time display was pretty wide and clicking anywhere
on the time popped the calendar. Maybe it isn't rendering the time altogether?
