Bug Description

On ubuntu trusty, Audio driver on HP Spectre x360 doesn't work.

May be related to the bug found on the 2015 XPS 13.

Wow, this add allot more details!
I'll wait your Ok Christopher for setting it back to confirmed.

Meanwhile, I received a email of someone having the same problems with the same laptop on Arch Linux. I will contact HP this week.

HP took the case in charge. The support service said they register the bug and sent it to their engineers. The guy's were kind. I still hope they correct the bug in a futur bios update (if it's a bios bug). That would be wunderfull. The last contact was Friday the last week, so we must be patient to let people the time correct the bug.

I was contacted by an HP case manager by phone. He told me that HP does not supply drivers. Are they doing it?

@Mark It's the right one. The firmware is located in the intel folder it as the name IntcSST2.bin. But, even if you have it, the bug will prevent you to load it. You can look in your dmesg. The message will change from "no driver" to a message saying that you cannot load the driver because the id doesn't fit. Remember you wont have more sound... If this bug is like the one on the DELL XPS 13, you will have the right driver for a baddly loaded hardware from the BIOS. And the BIOS is from... guess who? HP. So yes, this will depend on the HP good will.

At the other who have the problem. So keep calling the service and signaling the bug. That will help the cause.

At ubuntu debug team. I now really think this bug is not from you, I will just wait you confirm that it's not, and change it the won't fix.

Description of problem:
Installation succeeds on HP Spectre x360 (model 13-4003dx) without issue, except that sound will not work on the internal speakers.

The GNOME sound settings UI will show an empty list of sound devices. When an external device is connected (for example, a Bluetooth speaker), sound works perfectly on the external device and the device indeed becomes listed in the GNOME sound settings UI.

When attempting to adjust the sound volume in GNOME with no external speakers connected, the indicated sound device is "HDMI/DisplayPort". However, no sound is ever produced on the internal speakers.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 21, Fedora 22 with latest kernel (4.0.2)

How reproducible: Happens 100% of the time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 21 or 22 with any kernel up until the latest (4.0.2)

Actual results:
Sound will not work on internal speakers and no sound interface will be shown in GNOME settings. Sound will work on external Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

Expected results:
Sound is expected to work on internal speakers.

Additional info:
This appears to be a bug that is common across all new laptops shipping with the new Broadwell-U chipset. It has already been reported (and apparently resolved in a kernel update) for the Dell XPS 13 which ships with the same chipset [1] [2] -- however, the fixes described therein do not aid with the Spectre x360. A bug for the Spectre x360 is also currently open over at Ubuntu's bug tracker [2].

Searching for that codec name brought me to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1413446

In my case, the internal speakers are working fine, but the builtin microphone doesn't work (which matches the systems some folks have reported on that Ubuntu bug).

On closer inspection, it appears the audio on my system is actually coming out via the currently attached external monitor's speakers over HDMI, rather than using the internal audio.

Together with bug 1221050, this suggests to me current drivers may have significant compatibility issues with this particular chipset.

Hi All,

I was able to get this working on my HP Spectre x360 on Fedora 22 as follows:

1. Update grub config

# vi /etc/default/grub
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="$(sed 's, release .*$,,g' /etc/system-release)"
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=true
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="console"

   Before:
          GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.lvm.lv=fedora_spectre/swap rd.lvm.lv=fedora_spectre/root rhgb quiet"

   After:
         GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.lvm.lv=fedora_spectre/swap rd.lvm.lv=fedora_spectre/root rhgb quiet acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=`!Windows 2013` acpi_osi=`!Windows 2012`"

GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"

[root@spectre ~]# grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg

2. Reboot 2x

FWIW - I did not encounter this on my Lenovo x230. The underlying issue appear to be how Broadwell-based chipsets are recognized.

On the HP forums, folks noted that the backlight parameter was also required. This did appear to be the case for me as well - if I left it out, the sound worked fine but the screen dim/bright control did not.

Hope this helps!

After changing the backticks in Mark's workaround to single quotes, that configuration change did the trick for me - the on-board speakers and microphone in the Spectre 360 are working for me for the first time since I got it.

The two reboots appear to be needed - after the first reboot, the onboard audio still wasn't recognised, but it was there after the second one.

Gabriel Lemieux, as per http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Spectre-13-4000-x360-Convertible-PC/7527520/model/7801792 an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (F.25). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status Confirmed. Otherwise, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

I just updated to the F25 version BIOS, reverted back to the initial GRUB config (with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash") and booted two times: no improvement, the bug is still here (no sound).

Reconfiguring GRUB to use the sound card in legacy (HDA) mode (with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi='!Windows 2013' acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'") still works.

Same as the others, the command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
Returns: /dev/mem: Operation not permitted

Installing libsmbios and using the command: sudo getSystemId
Returns:
Libsmbios version: 2.2.28
Product Name: HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13
Vendor: Hewlett-Packard
BIOS Version: F.25
System ID: Could not determine System ID.

And, re Comment 13, is Redhat refusing this bug against Fedora?
If the former, it should be re-opened re Bug 1279238 and that marked a dup of this.
If the latter, that's a novel position for Redhat to take, could some clarification be given re bug policy - and Bug 1279238 should perhaps be similarly closed?

Bastien is saying that this is an upstream bug, so it should be filed (and hence fixed) upstream. There's nothing terribly novel about that, it happens all the time; Fedora has a stated policy that fixes should happen upstream where possible, not by downstream patching.

HP Spectre x360 with CX20724 codec has two speaker outputs while the

Sorry for the delay Chris (penalvch), I finally got back to my Linux partition. I noticed rc4 was released, so I downloaded and installed that and sound works! (wifi is still busted and I got some form of dkms apport "kernel is not supported" error when installing the deb, but that's beside the point... Again sorry for being unspecific, but having to reboot to post means a lot of detail gets lost...)

If this bug is finally fixed I'll be able to use my Linux partition much more :) Thanks for following this me-again and penalvch!

Now I'm really confused...

I saw 4.9 was released, so I installed it from the Ubuntu mainline debs (amd64: headers-all, headers-generic, image-generic). Rebooted and audio did NOT work. So I thought something must have changed between rc4 and final, so I reinstalled 4.9-rc4 (I still had the debs in my Downloads folder), rebooted, and audio still did NOT work.

I don't know if it's related or not, but WiFi is now working in rc4, which makes me think I'm not actually comparing apples-to-apples...

Thoughts? Thanks!

After a little more testing, it looks like I need to do a full shutdown/startup sequence (not restart) to get sound working in 4.9 (final). It also seems I need to do the same thing when I go back to my Windows partition or sound will not work in Windows. This is significantly better than the two cold-starts required in the past, but not ideal.
