Bug Description

Since gutsy tribe5 I have been able to use the compiz effects (both the normal ubuntu default effects and the fancy stuff like desktop cube etc). Everything have been working fine before, but after the last synaptic upgrade none of the desktop effects work anymore. When I went into preferences::appearance I can see "extra effects" is checked. Then I tried checking effects "none" instead. Now if I try to switch back to "extra" I get this error message saying "cannot enable compiz" and it doesn't say anything about why it doesn't work.

See attached screenshot for error details... remember, compiz with cube and everything worked perfectly on this machine just a week ago.

I don't see anything obviously "bad" in "dmesg" or "/var/log/messages". Also, the same error happens when I try to enable "normal" effects. My graphics card is a "Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (display adapter): GMA X3100". Inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf it says:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller"
        Driver "intel"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
