Bug Description

I'm missing the possibility to turn off the complete bluetooth system (i.e. the device) to reduce power consumption / save battery.

Please help me understand. Most of laptops have a hardware switch to turn off bluetooth. Why this should be handled in software?

Mine does not. And I think there are many other, that do neither.
Maybe the visibility of this menu item should be toggleable?

Switching Bluetooth on and off should be integrated with the rfkill switch framework. This is out of the scope of BlueZ and we decided not to handle it. It should always be done through HAL.

Ok, but you can add a switch here. I think this would be the right place for bluetooth.
I do not care, where the switching is actually done.

I have a radio killswitch (on my Thinkpad Z60m). But I need it on for WiFi. Powertop says my bluetooth device is the biggest cause of wakeups, but I've used it once in three years.

So I would like a way to switch off bluetooth without the killswitch (and preferably without having to reboot to reenable it).

edit /etc/default/bluetooth with sudo/root previleges and make BLUETOOTH_ENABLED=0

# start bluetooth on boot?
# compatibility note: If this variable is not found bluetooth will start
BLUETOOTH_ENABLED=0

This should be significantly improved in the BlueZ Gnome 1.8 package that entered intrepid yesterday. If your device supports a killswitch, you can now turn it off in bluetooth-properties.

i just was about to create a duplicate when i found this.

so you can en/disable bluetooth using Bluetooth Applet (like you can en/disable networks with nm-applet) in intrepid but you cannot with hardy - correct?
