Can you reproduce this symptom in a distribution upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10?

I'm planning to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 on the weekend of 15th, after giving things a chance to settle down. I'm still shaking things down from things like cdrecord device name changes, ATA drive name changes, etc.

When I do, I'll let you know if the problem has been fixed.
