invisible pointer on boot

Started up, logged in to gnome classic...got an error message about /etc/profile (not sure if related, will try to reproduce)
...and no pointer. Hit the laptop-shortcut to enable/disable touchpad...it did not come back. Plugged usb mouse in...still did not come back, but I discovered I could right click and

*I was able to right click and after a minute or two, the pointer reappeared. There is a separate issue where the screen brightness buttons do not work for a minute or two after boot...it seems like when the screen brightness buttons worked, that's when the pointer became not invisible.
