Bug Description

64-bit Mint17 Cinnamon
6-core AMD
24Gig of RAM

Applied all updates on March 26, 2015 which update manager had identified. NVidia driver started crashing lots, as in 3 times before 10am. Wasted a day trying every NVidia driver from PPA (since 331 from repo wasn't working) Every reboot comes up with:

Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration and, as a result, you may observe much higher than normal CPU usage.

There could be a problem with your drivers or some other issue. For the best experience, it is recommended that you only use this mode for troubleshooting purposes.

Per Mint forum followed instructions on this page: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/12#TOC-Installation-by-means-of-the-mamarley-nvidia-PPA

Noticed this during the purge step:

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.103ubuntu4.2) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24-generic
Warning: No support for locale: en_US.utf8

This seems to explain why not one single NVidia driver is working in 64-bit. The build into the kernel isn't happening correctly.

This problem surfaced with the state of the repositories on March 26, 2015. The state from roughly one week prior was fine. 331 driver was installed and working. Periodically suffered a resource crash, but that is because the driver had a resource leak.
